On the traditionally lucky date in the Chinese calendar, the 8th day of the 8th month, B&Q opened the doors of its fourth store in China. This is our largest store world-wide making it a truly special day and exciting event. The new Yangpu store in Shanghai is a two-storey building linked by the longest travelator (an escalator capable of carrying trolleys) in China, and covers 180,000 square feet - more than twice the size of two football pitches. Here, our Chinese customers can find everything they need for DIY, from flooring, fittings, lighting and paint through to kitchens, shower units, furniture and soft furnishings. There's also a decoration centre and design studio. The Chinese government has been encouraging home ownership with, an average of one billion square metres of new floor space built every year! New dwellings are sold as 'empty shells' that the home buyer needs to fit out fully and decorate from scratch. Hence, with a population of over 1.2 billion, inhabiting a total 400 million households, DIY is a soaring business in China and promises to be a massive opportunity for growth. Figures show a leap in the home improvement business from £4.5 billion in 1998 to £15.5 billion in 2000. B&Q already has three other stores in China - two in Shanghai and one in Suzhou. This latest Yangpu store will reinforce B&Q's position as Europe's number one DIY retailer and the third largest in the world.
